If you’ve ever had those tiny rough bumps on your arms or thighs that feel a bit like goosebumps, you might have keratosis pilaris (KP). It’s really common, but that doesn’t stop it being frustrating when you’re trying to get your skin feeling smoother!
I actually started looking more seriously into skincare because of my own skin struggles. I've had KP for as long as I can remember and tried so many different products over the years before I started figuring out what my skin seemed to prefer.
What Actually Is Keratosis Pilaris?
KP happens when keratin (a protein your skin naturally produces) builds up and blocks hair follicles. That’s what creates those little bumps and the rough texture.
It’s also really common if you tend to have dry skin, which is why a lot of people focus on gentle exfoliation and keeping their skin well moisturised.
Of course, everyone’s skin is different, so what works well for one person might not work the same for someone else!
The Ingredients That Helped Me
When I started researching skincare ingredients (which eventually led to me creating The Nocturne Reverie), I became really interested in natural ingredients that help with exfoliating and moisturising my skin.
Although there is no cure for KP, some ingredients do help!
For rough or bumpy skin, it's helpful to use body scrubs a few times a week to gently exfoliate and remove dead skin.
After that, moisturising is really important too. I personally love working with rich plant butters like:
- shea butter
- mango butter
- cocoa butter
- kokum butter
We use these ingredients in our sugar scrubs and body butters because they are so good at deeply moisturising and softening dry skin. And remember, consistency is key!
